  • 1 cup Vinegar Use as desired for reactions.

  • 1 Small cups or containers To contain the baking soda mixture.
  • 1 Tray or baking sheet To catch spills.
  • 1 Spoon For mixing baking soda and coloring.
  • 1 Eye dropper or small spoon For pouring vinegar.

Preparation

  • Set up a tray or baking sheet to catch the spills.
  • Gather all materials within reach.

Creating the Base

  • Pour a generous amount of baking soda into each small cup.
  • Make sure to create a mound for better reaction results.

Adding Color

  • Add a few drops of food coloring on top of the baking soda mound.
  • Encourage kids to mix colors for a rainbow effect, observing how they blend.

Ready for the Show

  • Using an eye dropper or small spoon, carefully pour vinegar over the colored baking soda.
  • Stand back and watch the fireworks erupt!

Observing and Enjoying

  • Note the fizzing and bubbling reaction. Engage the senses as colors mix and bubble.
  • Discuss what is happening and why the reaction occurs.

Notes

Customize colors by experimenting with different food color combinations. For a sparkly effect, mix in fine glitter before adding vinegar. Use different shaped containers for unique bursts. This activity can also be scaled for larger explosions.
