Ingredients

Volcano Materials

  • 2-3 tablespoons baking soda Base ingredient for eruption
  • 1 cup vinegar Acid that reacts with baking soda
  • 1 unit plastic bottle or container To hold the reaction
  • as desired drops food coloring Optional for colored lava
  • 1 unit tray or large dish To catch spills
  • 1 set measuring spoons For accurate ingredient addition
  • 1 unit funnel Optional, for easier pouring of ingredients

Instructions

Preparation

  • Place the plastic bottle in the center of the tray to serve as the volcano's crater.
  • Shape the tray around the bottle with clay or dough for a mountain look, if desired.

Eruption Setup

  • Using a funnel, add 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda into the bottle.
  • If using food coloring, add a few drops to the baking soda inside the bottle to enhance the lava's color.

The Eruption

  • Pour about 1 cup of vinegar quickly into the bottle.
  • Watch as the chemical reaction occurs, with carbon dioxide bubbles causing an eruption from the bottle.
  • Listen to the fizzing and gurgling sounds as your volcano erupts!

Repeat for More Fun

  • Feel free to repeat the process by adding more baking soda and vinegar for additional eruptions.

Notes

For colorful eruptions, use different food coloring combinations for each experiment. Use sparkling water instead of vinegar for a fizzier reaction. Adding dish soap to the vinegar gives a more bubbly lava effect.
