Materials for Crystal Growing Tree

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white vinegar Used to create the reaction with baking soda.
  • as needed pipe cleaners Green or other colors for the tree.
  • 1 small bowl or cup To create the tree base.
  • 1 stirring stick A spoon works well.
  • as needed food coloring Optional, for colorful crystals.
  • 1 tray or plate To catch drips during the crystallization process.

Instructions

Prepare the Tree Base

  • Craft the Tree Shape: Twist pipe cleaners together to form the shape of a tree. You can create a trunk and branches based on your design.
  • Secure the Tree: Place the tree upright in a small cup or bowl that will serve as the base.

Create the Crystal Solution

  • Mix Vinegar and Baking Soda: In a separate bowl, slowly pour 1 cup of vinegar into 1 cup of baking soda. Watch the fizzing reaction—this is carbon dioxide being released!
  • Add Water: Once fizzing has stopped, stir in 1 cup of water.
  • Add Color: If desired, mix in a few drops of food coloring to add vibrancy to your crystals.

Grow the Crystals

  • Pour the Solution: Carefully pour your baking soda and vinegar solution over the tree, ensuring it gets soaked.
  • Wait and Watch: Place the tree on a tray or plate to catch any drips and allow it to dry overnight.

Observe Growth

  • Crystallization Process: Over the next few hours to days, observe the crystals forming on your tree. Allow additional time for more significant growth.

Notes

Try different colors, add glitter, and vary tree sizes to customize your tree. Find a warm, dry area for the best results.
