For the Crystal Base

  • 1 cup Water
  • Pipe cleaners (green and other colors for decoration) Green for the tree shape; other colors for decoration.
  • String or yarn For hanging the tree.
  • A cup or jar For growing the crystals.
  • Spoon for mixing
  • Heat source (e.g., stove or microwave) To dissolve the baking soda.
  • Food coloring (optional) To customize the color of the crystals.

Instructions

Preparing the Base

  • Twist and bend the green pipe cleaners into a tree shape. Use additional colors to add decorations like flowers or ornaments.
  • Tie a piece of string to the top of your tree for hanging.

Making the Crystal Solution

  • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of baking soda with 1 cup of water. Stir it over medium heat until fully dissolved.
  • Optional: Add a few drops of food coloring to your mixture for a colorful effect.

Growing the Crystals

  • Carefully pour the baking soda solution into your cup or jar, leaving some space at the top.
  • Carefully lower your pipe cleaner tree into the solution, ensuring it does not touch the bottom.

Waiting for Crystals to Form

  • Allow the jar to sit undisturbed for several hours or overnight. As the water evaporates, crystals will start to form around your tree.

Final Touches

  • Once the desired growth is achieved, remove the tree and let it dry. You can now display your sparkling creation!

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations and tree shapes. If you don’t have pipe cleaners, use twigs or wire. You can also spray the finished tree lightly with hairspray to help set the crystals.
