Ingredients
For the Ornament Mixture
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 3/4 cup water
- Food coloring (various colors) Use as desired for coloring

Instructions
Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine the baking soda and cornstarch. Allow the kids to help mix; they’ll love the texture!
- Gradually add the water to the dry ingredients, stirring until a consistent mixture forms.
Cooking
- Pour the mixture into a saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring continuously.
- You will notice it thickening after a few minutes. When it resembles a dough, remove it from the heat.
Cooling
- Transfer the dough to a clean surface and let it cool for a bit—this is a great time to chat about galaxies!
Shaping the Ornaments
- Once cool enough to handle, knead the dough until smooth.
- Roll it out with a rolling pin to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes, or mold by hand.
Coloring and Adding Details
- Before baking, apply drops of food coloring on top. Swirl with a toothpick for a galaxy effect! Optionally add glitter for extra sparkle.
Baking
- Place shapes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake at 175°F (80°C) for 2-3 hours or until completely hard.
Finishing Touches
- Once baked, let them cool completely before adding string or ribbon for hanging.
Notes
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve colors. Sealing with a clear acrylic sealant after baking is optional for added shine.
