Baking Soda Galaxy Ornaments
Create whimsical galaxy-themed ornaments using simple materials like baking soda and cornstarch. This fun DIY project is perfect for all ages and allows for total creative freedom.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup cornstarch Can be substituted with all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup water
Additional Materials
- as needed cookie cutters (star, planet shapes, etc.)
- as needed food coloring or liquid watercolors Customize for unique designs
- as needed string or twine for hanging
- 1 baking sheet For baking the ornaments
- 1 parchment paper To line the baking sheet
Instructions
Preparation
- In a medium saucepan, combine baking soda, cornstarch, and water.
- Stir continuously over medium heat until the mixture thickens and resembles mashed potatoes.
Cooling & Kneading
- Remove the mixture from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Once cool enough to handle, knead the dough until smooth.
Coloring Dough
- Divide the dough into smaller portions and add food coloring or liquid watercolors.
- Knead each portion until you achieve your desired color intensity.
Shaping the Ornaments
- Roll out each colored dough portion to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Use cookie cutters to create shapes and make a small hole at the top for hanging.
Baking
- Place the shapes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 175°F (80°C) for about 2 hours, or until dry.
Cooling & Hanging
- Allow the ornaments to cool completely before threading the string or twine through the holes.
- Hang your beautiful galaxy ornaments anywhere you like!
Notes
Customize colors, add glitter before baking, and use paint to enhance designs post-drying. Ornaments can be made without baking by air-drying them.
