Baking Soda Glow Winter Tree Ornaments

Ingredients
For the Dough
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 3/4 cup cornstarch Can be swapped with flour if unavailable.
For Shaping and Baking
- 1 mixing bowl For combining ingredients.
- 1 baking sheet To place shaped ornaments for baking.
- 1 parchment paper To line the baking sheet.
- 1 rolling pin For rolling out the dough.
- twine or ribbon for hanging To hang your ornaments.
- cookie cutters (various shapes) To cut shapes for ornaments.
- optional: glow-in-the-dark paint, acrylic paint, or glitter For decorating ornaments.
Instructions
Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of white vinegar.
- Watch as the mixture bubbles and fizzes!
- Add 3/4 cup of cornstarch to the mixture and stir well until it becomes sticky.
Cooking
- Transfer the mixture to a saucepan over medium heat.
- Stir continuously until the dough thickens and pulls away from the sides (about 5-7 minutes).
- Allow the mixture to cool for a couple of minutes.
Shaping
- Sprinkle some cornstarch on your work surface to prevent sticking.
- Roll out the dough with a rolling pin to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Use cookie cutters to cut festive shapes from the rolled dough.
- Use a straw or skewer to create a hole for hanging.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 175°F (80°C).
- Place the shapes on a lined baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Let them cool completely after removing from the oven.
Decorating
- Once cooled, paint or decorate with glitter if desired.
- Thread twine or ribbon through the holes to hang your ornaments on the tree.
Notes
Experiment with different scents by adding essential oils to the mixture. Personalize ornaments with names and dates as keepsakes. If stored properly, these ornaments can last for several seasons.
