Ingredients

For the Snowman

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 0.5 cup water For mixing with baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon white vinegar For creating the crystal growth solution
  • 1 small bowl or container For mixing the ingredients
  • as needed pipe cleaners For arms and accessories
  • as needed googly eyes Optional for decoration
  • as needed food coloring Optional for coloring the snowman
  • 1 tray or dish For displaying the snowman

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of water. Stir the mixture until it forms a thick paste.
  • Use your hands to mold the baking soda paste into three balls of varying sizes (large for the base, medium for the body, small for the head). Stack the balls on top of each other to create your snowman.
  • Decorate your snowman using pipe cleaners for arms and top hats, and add googly eyes for personality. Feel free to use food coloring to give your snowman a splash of color.
  • In another bowl, mix 1 cup of water with 1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar and pour this solution over your snowman.
  • Place your creation on a tray or dish to catch any drips and allow the snowman to sit for several hours or overnight to see the crystals start to form.

Notes

Customize your snowman with glitter or other decorative materials. You can also try other salts or sugars in place of baking soda for different crystal effects.
