Ingredients

Materials

  • 1 cup baking soda The main ingredient for forming the tree.
  • 1/2 cup vinegar Creates the reaction with baking soda.
  • 1 teaspoon dish soap Enhances the reaction and helps with consistency.
  • food coloring (optional) For adding color to the tree.
  • plastic cup or shallow dish For forming the tree structure.
  • a paintbrush or pipette For applying the vinegar mixture.
  • baking tray or surface To catch any overflow during the reaction.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Take your baking soda and pour it into the center of the plastic cup or shallow dish. Shape it into a simple tree formation, with a broad base and lower branches tapering off toward the top.
  • If you're using food coloring, mix a few drops into the baking soda to enhance your creation. You can layer different colors for a more vibrant tree.

Creating the Reaction

  • In a separate container, combine the vinegar and dish soap. Stir gently to mix without creating too many bubbles.
  • Using a paintbrush or pipette, drizzle the vinegar mixture over the baking soda tree. Watch closely as a fizzing reaction begins!
  • As the reaction occurs, the edges of the 'tree' will start to rise and 'grow'. You can add more of the vinegar mixture as needed to see continued growth.

Notes

Tips: Add glitter for a sparkling effect, use silicone molds for different shapes, and explore multiple colors of food coloring. Remember that the reaction is a one-time event, but you can save the dried structure for decoration.
