Preparation

  • Cut the cardboard or foil into a small tree shape or a simple base.
  • Position this base in the center of a shallow tray or plate.
  • In a bowl, mix 1 cup of baking soda with a few drops of food coloring if desired.
  • Ensure the baking soda is evenly colored and take a moment to appreciate its fine, powdery texture.
  • Mold the colored baking soda into a tree shape on top of the base.
  • Use your fingers to create branches and twigs, focusing on texture and form.
  • In a separate bowl, mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1 tablespoon of dish soap.
  • Using the pipette, carefully drip the vinegar mixture over the baking soda tree.
  • Watch as the mixture fizzes and foams, transforming the tree with each drop.
  • Observe how the reaction forms delightful textures. The bubbling and fizzing is a sensory delight.
  • Allow the tree to sit for a while to see the beauty of the expanding structure.

Notes

You can try different colors of food coloring for a rainbow effect. Consider adding glitter for a sparkling touch. This project is suitable for all ages, making it a great family activity.
