Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda Main ingredient that reacts with vinegar.
  • 1/2 cup vinegar Creates the effervescent reaction.
  • 1/2 cup water Used to mix with baking soda.

Optional Ingredients

  • Food coloring To add color to trees.
  • Small cup or container For mixing the ingredients.
  • Tray or shallow dish To catch overflow during the reaction.
  • Craft stick or spoon For stirring the mixture.
  • Salt or sugar Optional, for adding texture.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Set up a clean area with all materials at hand. Place a tray underneath to catch spills.

Mixing

  • In a small cup, combine 1 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of water. Mix well using a craft stick or spoon until fully dissolved. The mixture will become a thick paste.

Shaping

  • Using your hands or a spoon, mold the baking soda mixture into tree shapes on the tray. Be creative with branches and trunks.

Coloring

  • If you want colorful trees, add food coloring to your baking soda mixture before shaping or sprinkle it on after you’ve formed the trees.

The Chemical Reaction

  • Slowly pour 1/2 cup of vinegar over the shaped trees. Watch as the chemical reaction occurs; the trees will begin to 'grow' and fizz impressively!

Observation

  • Take a moment to observe the fizzy effect and the growth of your trees. Discuss the science behind the reaction!

Notes

For sturdier trees, let the shaped mixture dry overnight before adding vinegar. Experiment with different food coloring combinations for a rainbow effect.
