Preparation

  • Cut a piece of paper or cardboard to create a base where the tree will stand.
  • In a small bowl, measure 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda.
  • Use your fingers or a spoon to mold the baking soda into a tree shape on the base.
  • Drizzle food coloring onto the baking soda tree if desired.
  • In a separate cup, pour about 1/4 cup of vinegar.

Creating the Reaction

  • Slowly pour the vinegar over the baking soda tree.
  • Watch as the mixture fizzes and expands, producing a bubbly eruption.

Observation

  • Allow the reaction to continue for several minutes, observing how the tree changes shape.

Notes

After the reaction, let your tree dry; it can harden into a sculpture. Use different food colorings for unique appearances. Experiment with shapes for variation. Adding glitter can enhance the visual effect.
