Ingredients

Materials

  • 1 cup Baking soda Main ingredient for crystal formation.
  • 0.5 cup Water To dissolve with baking soda.
  • a few drops Food coloring (various colors) Adjust per color preference.
  • 2-4 cups Clear cups or containers For mixing and displaying colors.
  • 1 Spoon for stirring
  • 1 Tray or baking sheet To catch spills.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a clear cup, mix 1 cup of baking soda with ½ cup of water.
  • Stir the mixture until the baking soda is completely dissolved. You’ll notice a bubbly texture; this is normal!

Color Addition

  • Divide the mixture into smaller cups (2-4) depending on how many colors you want.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to each cup. Mix well!

Setting Up

  • Place your colored mixtures on a tray or baking sheet to catch any spills.
  • Allow the cups to sit undisturbed in a cool, dry place. You can cover them lightly with plastic wrap to prevent dust contamination.

Observation

  • Over the next few hours to days, observe the crystals forming!
  • Notice the texture changing; your crystals will become more prominent as the water evaporates.

Displaying Your Creation

  • Once the crystals have formed to your satisfaction, gently remove them from the cups and display them. Be careful, as they are fragile!

Notes

Customize colors by mixing different shades or layering them. Try using salt instead of baking soda for different types of crystal growth. To add a fun touch, incorporate glitter into the mixtures!
