Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda This is the primary ingredient for creating crystals.
  • 1/3 cup water Use to mix with baking soda.
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar This will react with the baking soda to create crystals.
  • various food coloring Choose your favorite colors for vibrant crystals.
  • 1 each small bowls or containers One for each color of food coloring.
  • 1 each baking sheet For placing the crystal mounds.
  • 1 sheet parchment paper To line the baking sheet.
  • 1 each spoon or stick for stirring To mix the baking soda and water.
  • 1 pair protective gloves Optional, for handling the vinegar.

Instructions
 

Prepare the Baking Soda Mixture

  • In a large bowl, mix the baking soda and water until fully combined.
  • Divide the mixture into small bowls, adding a few drops of different food coloring to each bowl. Stir well.

Create the Crystal Forest

  • Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Scoop spoonfuls of the colored baking soda mixture onto the parchment paper, creating small mounds or 'trees.'
  • Carefully drizzle a small amount of white vinegar over each mound and watch the effervescent reaction.

Drying the Crystals

  • Place the baking sheet in the oven and let it dry for 1-2 hours, until the mounds harden and crystals form.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before handling.

Notes

Experiment with different food color combinations and use cookie cutters for shaping. Store leftover crystals in an airtight container.
