  • 1/2 cup Water To mix with baking soda.
  • as needed drops Food coloring Various colors to personalize your trees.
  • as needed Pipe cleaners (or wire) Used to shape the trees.
  • as needed Small cups or containers To hold the trees during crystallization.
  • 1 Tray or shallow dish To catch the overflow during the reaction.
  • as needed White vinegar For the chemical reaction.
  • 1 spoon Spoon for mixing Used to combine the ingredients.

Preparation

  • Shape your pipe cleaners into tree-like structures, twisting them together to create branches. You can also make different shapes like spirals or stars.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the baking soda and water to form a paste that is thick enough to hold its shape.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring into the baking soda paste and mix until you achieve your desired color.
  • Dip your pipe cleaner trees into the colored baking soda mixture, ensuring they are well coated.
  • Place the coated trees upright in small cups or containers.
  • In another bowl, mix equal parts of vinegar and food coloring to create the vinegar mixture.
  • Slowly pour the vinegar mixture over your trees to trigger the reaction and watch the fizzing and bubbling!
  • Allow the trees to sit for 24 hours undisturbed to see the crystals forming.

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations for unique hues. Use varying amounts of baking soda and vinegar for different-sized trees. Sprinkle glitter on the wet crystals for added sparkle. Mold pieces of aluminum foil or cardstock to support your trees for a sturdier base.
