Ingredients

For the bird feeder

  • 2 cups wild bird seed mix Easy to find at local stores
  • 2 tablespoons unflavored gelatin A natural binding agent
  • 1/4 cup water To prepare the gelatin
  • twine or string For hanging the feeder
  • cookie cutters or silicone molds Optional but fun for shaping
  • mixing bowl For combining ingredients
  • spoon or spatula To stir everything together
  • wax paper To place the shaped feeders on for cooling

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by preparing your gelatin. In a small bowl, mix together about ΒΌ cup of water with 2 tablespoons of unflavored gelatin. Stir until fully dissolved.
  • In a larger bowl, combine 2 cups of bird seed mix with the gelatin mixture. Use your fingers or a spoon to mix until the seeds absorb the gelatin and become sticky.
  • If using cookie cutters or molds, place them on a sheet of wax paper. Pack the seed mixture tightly into each shape, using your hands to press it down.

Assembly

  • Before they fully harden, insert a piece of twine through the top of the mold to create a hanging loop. Press the seed mixture around it to secure the knot.
  • Allow the feeders to cool and set for at least 2-4 hours, or overnight if possible.
  • Once dry, carefully remove the feeders from the molds.

Final Steps

  • Hang your bird feeders in a visible spot near a window or on a tree branch.

Notes

After the initial joy of creating and hanging your bird feeders, consider cleaning and refilling them once the seeds are gone. Store any leftover seed mix in a cool, dry place to keep it fresh.
