  • 2 cups wild birdseed Choose a blend that appeals to various birds.
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup Can be swapped for honey for a different flavor.
  • 1/2 cup water Warm water is used to dissolve gelatin.
  • 1 packet unflavored gelatin Using unflavored prevents attracting unwanted insects.
  • Cookie cutters (various shapes) Use to shape the ornaments.
  • Twine or string For hanging the ornaments.
  • Wax paper To catch spills and for shaping.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Clear a clean, flat surface to work on.
  • Lay out wax paper to catch spills.

Mixing Ingredients

  • In a bowl, combine the birdseed and corn syrup.
  • In a small pot, heat water until warm, then sprinkle in the gelatin.
  • Stir until the gelatin dissolves completely.
  • Pour the dissolved gelatin into the birdseed mixture.
  • Mix thoroughly until all the seeds are coated and sticky.

Shaping

  • Press the mixture into cookie cutters on the wax paper.
  • Use a straw to poke a hole at the top for hanging.

Drying

  • Allow the ornaments to dry for several hours or overnight.
  • Once set, gently remove them from the cookie cutters.

Finishing Touches

  • Thread twine or string through the holes.
  • Your birdseed ornaments are ready to hang!

Notes

Consider using food coloring to dye the ornaments for a pop of color. You can also add dried fruits or nuts for additional textures. If you don’t have cookie cutters, you can form them into balls or other shapes by hand.
