Borax Crystal Flowers
Create beautiful and colorful crystal flowers using borax and pipe cleaners in a simple scientific craft.
Ingredients
Materials
- 1 cup Borax (sodium borate) For making the crystallization solution.
- 3 cups Hot water Boiled water for the solution.
- various pieces Pipe cleaners Various colors to create flower shapes.
- 1 container Glass jar or container To hold the Borax solution and flowers.
- 1 spoon Spoon for stirring To mix in Borax with water.
- 1 piece String or fishing line To suspend the flowers in the solution.
- optional Food coloring or glitter For added flair to the crystal flowers.
Instructions
Preparation
- Bend the pipe cleaners into flower shapes. Shape different colors to create vibrant blooms. Attach multiple flowers on one stem for a fuller look.
Create Borax Solution
- Boil water and measure out about 3 cups into your glass jar.
- Gradually add Borax to the hot water, continually stirring. Use about 1 cup, or until it becomes saturated (you should see some Borax at the bottom).
Add Color (Optional)
- If desired, mix in food coloring or glitter into the Borax solution and stir thoroughly for an eye-catching effect.
Immerse the Flowers
- Tie the string around your flower stem and suspend it in the jar so it’s submerged in the solution but not touching the bottom.
- Secure the string to the jar’s rim or a stick across the top for stability.
Allow Crystallization
- Place the jar in a quiet, undisturbed area. Leave it overnight or for a full day. As the solution cools, crystals will form around the flowers!
Admire Your Work
- After 24 hours, carefully remove your crystal flowers from the solution and let them dry on a paper towel.
Notes
Experiment with different shapes of pipe cleaners (stars, hearts) to create unique designs. Use colored glue or paint on the pipe cleaners for varied finishes. For larger flowers, increase the amount of Borax and solution. Try using different types of containers for various display options.
