Ingredients

For Crystal Growth

  • 3 tablespoons Borax powder Available in the laundry section
  • 2 cups Water Boiled for optimal solubility
  • Food coloring (optional) For color enhancement of the crystals

For Assembly

  • Pipe cleaners In desired colors for making sea urchin shapes
  • String or fishing line For hanging the sea urchin
  • Pencil or stick Used to suspend the sea urchin in the solution
  • Clear glass or container For growing the crystals

Instructions

Preparation

  • Twist and mold the pipe cleaners into a sea urchin shape, ensuring it’s compact so crystals can adhere well.
  • Tie one end of a string or fishing line to your sea urchin and the other end to a pencil or stick.

Making the Borax Solution

  • Boil about 2 cups of water and carefully pour it into a clean glass or container.
  • Gradually mix in 3 tablespoons of Borax, stirring until it completely dissolves. For colorful crystals, add a few drops of food coloring.

Crystal Growth

  • Hang your pipe cleaner sea urchin in the solution, ensuring it doesn’t touch the sides or bottom of the container.
  • Allow the container to sit undisturbed for several hours or overnight.

Finishing Touches

  • After a few hours, check the sea urchin. If you’re happy with the crystal growth, remove it; if not, leave it for longer.
  • Carefully take it out, rinse with cool water, and let it dry completely.

Notes

Experiment with different food colorings for unique patterns. Adjust the amount of Borax and the length of the string to create larger or smaller sea urchins. For extra sparkle, sprinkle some edible glitter into the Borax solution.
