Ingredients

Materials

  • 1/2 cup Borax
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • pipe cleaners (star-shaped)
  • a glass jar or bowl
  • string or fishing line
  • pencil or chopstick (for hanging)
  • optional: food coloring (for coloring crystals)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Twist pipe cleaners into star shapes, making them as small or large as you wish.
  • Attach a piece of string to the star, leaving enough length to suspend it in the jar.

Create the Borax Solution

  • Bring 2 cups of water to a boil on the stove.
  • Carefully stir in 1/2 cup of Borax until it’s fully dissolved.
  • If you'd like colored crystals, add a few drops of food coloring to the solution and mix well.

Crystal Growth

  • Using a pencil or chopstick, suspend your star into the jar so it’s fully submerged but not touching the sides or bottom.
  • Allow the jar to sit undisturbed overnight.
  • In the morning, you’ll see beautiful Borax crystals formed on the star. Rinse off any residue with water.

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring to create a rainbow of crystal stars. For larger crystals, let the solution sit longer than overnight. Keep finished ornaments in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
