Materials

  • 1 piece Empty plastic bottle Any plastic bottle will work, but larger bottles may create bigger bubbles.
  • 1 piece Scissors For cutting the bottom of the bottle.
  • 1 piece Sock (preferably an old one or a sponge) This will cover the cut end of the bottle.
  • 1/4 cup Dish soap Use other liquid soaps if necessary, but results may vary.
  • 1 cup Water For making the bubble solution.
  • a few drops Food coloring (optional) Add to bubble solution for colorful bubbles.
  • 1 piece Bowl or shallow dish For mixing the bubble solution.
  • 1 piece Straw (optional) For blowing bubbles.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Take the empty plastic bottle and use scissors to cut off the bottom.
  • Cover the cut end of the bottle with the sock, ensuring it’s pulled tight and secured.

Making Bubble Solution

  • In a bowl or shallow dish, mix about 1/4 cup of dish soap with 1 cup of water.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring if you’d like colorful bubbles.

Creating Bubbles

  • Dip the sock-covered end of the bottle into the bubble solution and allow it to soak for a couple of seconds.
  • If using a straw, place it in the bottle’s opening and gently blow into the straw. If not using a straw, simply blow through the end of the bottle to form the bubbles.

Notes

Customize with colored socks or glitter for added effect. Set up a bubble station for multiple colors. Discuss scientific concepts like air pressure and surface tension during the activity.
