Ingredients

  • 1 container Clear glass or plastic container (jar or bottle) Choose a suitable size for the experiment.
  • 1/3 full Water Fill the container about one-third full.
  • sufficient Vegetable oil (or any light oil) Use enough to nearly fill the container on top of the water.
  • a few drops Food coloring (various colors) Use different colors for vibrant effects.
  • 1 tablespoon Baking soda Mix with a bit of water to create a paste.
  • 1/4 cup Vinegar Pour slowly to initiate bubbling action.
  • optional Glitter or small decorations For added fun and decoration.

Preparation

  • Fill your container about one-third full with water.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the water for a vibrant effect and stir gently.

Creating the Lava Effect

  • Slowly pour vegetable oil into the container until it is nearly full.
  • Observe how the oil floats above the water due to its lower density.
  • In a small bowl, mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a bit of water to create a paste and add it to the container.
  • Pour vinegar into the container slowly.
  • Watch as colorful bubbles rise, creating a lava-like effect.

Enjoy the Show

  • Observe the bubbling action and add more vinegar as desired to keep the reaction going.

Notes

Customize the experiment by changing food colors. You can also use glitter for a magical touch and experiment with different sized containers. Make sure to conduct under adult supervision for younger children.
