Preparing the Oranges

  • Rinse the oranges thoroughly under cold water to remove any wax or residues.
  • Using a sharp knife, slice the oranges into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Aim for uniform thickness.
  • Check for and remove any seeds while slicing for a smoother result.

Making the Syrup

  • In a medium-sized saucepan, mix the sugar, water, and a pinch of salt. Optionally, add lemon juice.
  • Heat over medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently.

Candying the Oranges

  • Carefully place the orange slices into the syrup, ensuring they are fully submerged.
  • Allow the slices to simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour until they become translucent. Stir occasionally.
  • Using tongs, remove the orange slices from the syrup and place them on a cooling rack or parchment paper to dry.

Final Touch

  • Allow the slices to cool completely; they will become less sticky as they dry.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to a month. Experiment with different citrus fruits or flavor infusions like spices.
