Materials Needed

  • 5 pieces Coffee filters
  • 8 colors Washable markers (in various colors) Different colors for vibrant results
  • 1 bottle Spray bottle with water For moistening the filters
  • 1 piece Scissors For cutting filters into shapes
  • 1 piece Pipe cleaners or string For making the butterfly body
  • 1 piece Pencil (optional) For drawing designs

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Start with a clean coffee filter.
  • Using washable markers, draw different patterns or colors on the filter. Be creative! Make swirls, dots, or lines.

Moistening the Filters

  • Fill the spray bottle with water.
  • Lightly spray the coffee filter to moisten it. Watch closely as the colors start to bleed and mix!

Drying the Filters

  • Lay the moistened coffee filters flat on a paper towel or drying rack.
  • Allow them to dry completely, which usually takes about 15-30 minutes.

Creating Butterfly Bodies

  • Once dry, fold the coffee filter in half.
  • Pinch the middle and secure it with a pipe cleaner or string to form the butterfly's body.

Shaping Your Butterfly

  • Gently spread the filter's sides to create wings.
  • Adjust the pipe cleaner to look like antennae.

Displaying Your Art

  • Hang your beautiful chromatography butterflies around your home or use them in crafts.

Notes

Color Choices: Use different markers to see how the colors blend. Experiment with different shapes for the butterflies. For a fun twist, sprinkle glitter on your butterflies before they dry. You can attach your butterflies to sticks and place them in flower pots for a decorative touch.
