  • 1 pack Coffee filters Easy to find at any grocery store
  • 4-5 pieces Washable markers Substitute with any safe, non-toxic markers
  • 1 bottle Spray bottle filled with water For misting the filters
  • optional pieces Pipe cleaners For making butterfly bodies
  • 1-2 pieces Small bowls or trays To catch drips
  • 1-2 pieces Paper towels For easy cleanup

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Begin by laying out your coffee filters on a flat surface.
  • Choose your markers and begin adding dots or lines of color at various spots on the filter.
  • Once you've colored your filters, take the spray bottle and gently mist the surface.
  • Allow the filters to dry completely.

Assembly

  • Once dry, gently fold the filter in half.
  • Gather your pipe cleaner stems (if using) and twist it around the center of the folded filter.
  • Shape the wings by curling or bending them slightly.
  • Stand back and admire your creation.

Notes

These butterflies can be used as decorations or hung in a window. Store them in a flat container for safekeeping, and involve kids in the creative process.
