For Dyeing

  • 1 pack Coffee filters (white or brown) Easy to find at any grocery store
  • 1 cup Food coloring or watercolor paint Substitution-friendly
  • 1 cup Water For dyeing

For Assembly

  • 2 pieces Small bowls or cups For dye
  • 1 pair Scissors To cut shapes
  • 1 bottle Glue School glue or hot glue gun works well
  • 1 length Ribbon or twine Optional for decoration
  • 1 piece A pencil For light marking

Instructions

Dye Preparation

  • Begin by preparing your dye. Mix food coloring or watercolor with water in small bowls, experimenting with different shades.
  • Submerge the coffee filters into the dye mixture for about a minute or two, then lay them flat on paper towels to dry.

Assembling the Basket

  • Once dry, stack several filters on top. Fold your stack in half, then in half again to create a smaller quarter.
  • Use scissors to gently round the edges of the filters.
  • Bring the sides of your folded filters together to form a cone-like shape, applying glue to hold them in place.
  • Cut a strip of a coffee filter or use ribbon for the basket's handle and glue it securely to the inside of the basket.
  • Set the basket aside to dry completely, considering personalizing it with handwritten notes or small decorations.

Notes

These delicate baskets can be reused each year; simply reshape if slightly flattened. Experiment with natural dyes like beet juice or turmeric for different effects and invite friends or children to join in the crafting fun.
