Supplies for Coffee Filter Flowers

  • 1 pack Coffee filters (plain, bleached or unbleached) Use any type you have.
  • 1 set Food coloring or watercolor paints Optional: use what you have on hand.
  • 2-3 small cups Small cups for mixing colors
  • 1 each Paintbrush or spray bottle with water
  • 1 each Pipe cleaners or flexible wire for stems You can use wire if pipe cleaners are not available.
  • 1 each Scissors For cutting filters or stems.
  • 1 each A workspace covered in newspaper or a non-staining surface Protect your workspace.
  • 1 optional Twine or ribbon for finishing touches Use to decorate the stems.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by laying out your workspace. Feel the texture of the newspaper or your crafting surface beneath your fingers.
  • Take a coffee filter and place it flat on your workspace. Notice its softness as you hold it gently.
  • If you choose to color your flowers, mix your food coloring or watercolors in a small cup with a bit of water. Dip your brush into the paints, marveling at how colors blend and dance together.
  • Lightly brush the color onto the filter, allowing it to spread and soak in. You may also use a spray bottle for a softer approach. The colors will flow and mix, creating a unique texture.
  • Once you achieve the desired look, set the colored filter aside to dry.
  • As the filter dries, take a second one and repeat the coloring process. Creating more layers enhances the fullness of your flowers.

Shaping the Flowers

  • Once dry, carefully fold each filter in half, then in half again for an accordion style that shapes the flower petals.
  • At the narrow end, gently pinch the middle to create a bloom shape.
  • Secure the base with a pipe cleaner or a piece of wire. Twist it tightly to form the stem. You may choose to curl the ends for more character.

Finishing Touches

  • Fluff out the layers of your flower petals gently. Each layer lifts to give life to your creation.
  • You can create more flowers using different colors and sizes of filters.
  • Arrange your flowers in a vase, or group them into a bouquet.

Notes

Store finished flowers in a cool, dry place to avoid fading. A light mist of water can refresh their look. You may personalize your flowers by experimenting with shapes, scents, and embellishments.
