Materials

  • 5 pieces Coffee filters (white or natural) These are easiest to work with.
  • 1 set Watercolor paints (vibrant shades or pastel colors) Choose colors that resonate with you.
  • 1 piece Scissors (round-tipped for safety) Safety scissors recommended for children.
  • 1 set Green floral wire or craft stems Used to create the stems of the flowers.
  • 1 piece Hot glue gun or school glue For assembling the layers of the poppy.
  • optional Craft paintbrushes, disposable cups for mixing paint, and a palette for color mixing Helpful for applying paint.

Instructions

Making the Poppies

  • Take a coffee filter and flatten it gently.
  • Lightly twist or crumple the filter into a cone shape to form the base of your poppy.
  • Using scissors, create petals by cutting out a wave pattern along the top edge of the filter.
  • Add color using watercolor paints to brush gentle swirls across the filter.
  • After the paint dries, take a second filter and repeat the previous steps, cutting smaller waves.
  • Layer the petals by placing the smaller filter on top of the larger one, securing the center with a dot of glue.
  • Wrap green floral wire around the base of the petals to create a sturdy stem.
  • To add leaves, cut small shapes from leftover coffee filters and attach them with glue.
  • Allow everything to dry completely before displaying your poppies.

Notes

Keep finished flowers in a cool, dry place away from sunlight to preserve colors. Use a soft box lined with tissue paper for storage.
