  • 1 cup Whole milk (or any milk of choice) Higher fat content gives better results.
  • 5-6 drops Food coloring (various colors) Use multiple colors for better visual effects.
  • 1 teaspoon Dish soap (liquid) Any liquid dish soap will work.
  • 1 piece A shallow dish or plate Choose a container that allows easy visibility of the colors.
  • 1 piece Toothpick or cotton swab For mixing the soap into the milk.

Preparation

  • Cover your workspace with newspaper or a disposable tablecloth to catch any spills.
  • Carefully pour enough milk into the shallow dish to cover the bottom (about 1/2 inch deep).
  • Using food coloring, place drops of different colors around the milk and observe the spread.

Execution

  • Dip the toothpick or cotton swab in dish soap and touch it to the center of the colored drops to see the colors burst and swirl.
  • Swirl the milk with the toothpick to further mix the colors, adding more food coloring or soap for more effects.

Notes

Experiment with different types of milk, color combinations, or even add edible glitter for sparkly effects. Turn this into a science project by measuring the time for colors to disperse.
