Tools

  • 1 Whisk To combine dry and wet ingredients.
  • 1 Plastic wrap For covering the dough while resting.
  • 1 Baking sheet Optional for drying the stones.

Instructions

Preparing the Dough

  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and cream of tartar using a whisk. Feel the texture—it should be dry and grainy.
  • Pour in water and vegetable oil. Mix until smooth, ensuring there are no lumps.
  • Divide the dough into sections based on the number of colors you want. Add food coloring to each section and knead until the color is evenly distributed.

Shaping the Stones

  • Take a small piece of dough and roll it into a ball, then squish it flat to create a stone shape.
  • Experiment with textures—add patterns using tools or your fingers.

Drying the Stones

  • Place the shaped stones onto a baking sheet. If you prefer them to harden, let them sit out for 24 hours.
  • Alternatively, bake at a low temperature (200°F) for about 2 hours.

Notes

Customization: Add glitter or spices for texture and smell. Use natural dyes like beet juice or turmeric for coloring. This recipe can also be adapted for making other crafts.
