Colorful Crystalline Towers

Ingredients
  

For the crystalline solution

  • 1 cup Epsom salts or sugar Choose Epsom salts for larger crystals.
  • 1 cup water Water should be boiled.
  • 5-10 drops food coloring Various colors can be used.

For the setup

  • 2 pieces clear glass or plastic jars Use jars that are not too narrow.
  • 1 piece spoon For stirring.
  • 1 small pot small pot for heating water To boil the water.
  • 1 piece string (optional for hanging) Use to encourage crystal growth.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Boil about 1 cup of water in a small pot.
  • Gradually add 1 cup of Epsom salts (or sugar), stirring well until it dissolves completely.

Add Color

  • Add 5-10 drops of food coloring to the solution and mix until the color is even.

Set Up Jars

  • Carefully pour the colored solution into clear jars, filling them up to about 3/4 full.

Create Crystals

  • Allow the solution to cool for around 30 minutes.
  • If using string, place one end in the solution to encourage crystal growth along it.

Observe Growth

  • Set the jars in a cool, undisturbed place for several days.
  • Observe the crystals forming as the solution evaporates.

Notes

Experiment with other salts like table salt or borax for different crystal styles. Combine food coloring for unique shades and pour different colored solutions into the same jar for a multi-colored tower effect.
