Preparation

  • Start by laying down a tray or setting your container on a surface that can get messy.
  • Gather all your materials within reach for easy access.

Mix Ingredients

  • In your container, add 1/2 cup of baking soda.
  • Drizzle 1 tablespoon of dish soap over the baking soda for added bubbles.

Add Color

  • Use food coloring to add a splash of color; you can use one hue or create a rainbow by adding different colors.

Create the Eruption

  • Slowly pour 1 cup of vinegar into the container with the baking soda mixture.
  • Stand back and watch as the colorful eruption begins!

Observe the Reaction

  • Enjoy the fizzing and bubbling action; encourage everyone to describe what they see and hear.

Notes

After the experiment, rinse your container and tray with water. It's best to enjoy the reaction immediately, as the ingredients will lose potency once mixed. Pair this experiment with a lesson on acidity and alkalinity.
