Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup Baking soda
  • 1 cup Vinegar White vinegar works best, but apple cider vinegar can also be used.
  • assorted colors Food coloring Different colors can be mixed for unique shades.
  • 1 tablespoon Dish soap Helps create bubbles in the reaction.

Additional Materials

  • 1 Tray or large shallow dish To contain the erupting colors.
  • 1 Measuring cups
  • 1 Spoon for mixing
  • optional Safety goggles Recommended for safety, especially for younger kids.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Gather all materials and choose a flat, open area.
  • Lay down a tray or shallow dish to contain the erupting colors.

Mixing

  • In a bowl, combine 1 cup of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of dish soap.
  • Mix thoroughly to create a consistent paste.

Coloring

  • Divide the baking soda mixture into smaller cups.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to each cup.
  • Stir gently to mix the colors but be careful not to overmix; a swirl effect is beautiful!

Eruption

  • Spoon the colored baking soda mixture into the center of your tray.
  • Slowly pour 1 cup of vinegar over the baking soda mixture.
  • Stand back and watch the colorful eruption happen!

Observation

  • Notice how the vinegar interacts with the baking soda, creating bubbles and fizz.
  • Discuss the colors and patterns as they erupt.

Notes

Consider extending the activity by having kids predict the outcomes based on different color combinations. Experiment with adding different materials like crushed chalk or corn syrup to change the eruption's texture.
