Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup white vinegar

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • ½ cup baking soda

Other

  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Molds (silicone molds, ice cube trays)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Baking sheet

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of water and ½ cup of white vinegar. Whisk the mixture until well blended.
  • In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of cornstarch with ½ cup of baking soda. Mix thoroughly to eliminate clumps.
  • Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, stirring consistently. Add food coloring to your desired intensity and mix until the color is uniform.
  • Carefully pour the colorful mixture into molds. Fill them to the top for bigger explosions! Allow the mixture to settle and bubble a bit as it reacts in the molds.
  • Let the molds sit for 24 hours to dry completely. Once dry, carefully pop out the sidewalk chalk from the molds.

Exploding

  • Take your finished sidewalk chalk outdoors. Hit it with a hammer, or simply crush it gently on the sidewalk for a spectacular explosion of color!

Notes

Customization: Change the ratios of baking soda and vinegar for different levels of fizz. Swapping Materials: Use gelatin instead of cornstarch for a smoother texture. Size Options: Use larger molds for bigger spectacular displays. Add Scents: Incorporate essential oils for aromatic fun while creating.
