Colorful Exploding Sidewalk Chalk
Create vibrant sidewalk chalk that explodes with color! This fun DIY science project is perfect for engaging kids in creativity and chemistry.
Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup white vinegar
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup cornstarch
- ½ cup baking soda
Other
- Food coloring (various colors)
- Molds (silicone molds, ice cube trays)
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk or spoon
- Baking sheet
Instructions
Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of water and ½ cup of white vinegar. Whisk the mixture until well blended.
- In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of cornstarch with ½ cup of baking soda. Mix thoroughly to eliminate clumps.
- Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, stirring consistently. Add food coloring to your desired intensity and mix until the color is uniform.
- Carefully pour the colorful mixture into molds. Fill them to the top for bigger explosions! Allow the mixture to settle and bubble a bit as it reacts in the molds.
- Let the molds sit for 24 hours to dry completely. Once dry, carefully pop out the sidewalk chalk from the molds.
Exploding
- Take your finished sidewalk chalk outdoors. Hit it with a hammer, or simply crush it gently on the sidewalk for a spectacular explosion of color!
Notes
Customization: Change the ratios of baking soda and vinegar for different levels of fizz. Swapping Materials: Use gelatin instead of cornstarch for a smoother texture.
