Ingredients
  

Materials

  • 1 cup Baking soda For creating the landscape.
  • 1/2 cup Vinegar Used to create the reaction.
  • several drops Food coloring (red, white, blue) To create vibrant colors.
  • 3 each Shallow trays or baking sheets For setting up the colored baking soda.
  • 4 each Cups for mixing To mix colors with baking soda.
  • 4 each Spoons for stirring For mixing the baking soda and food coloring.
  • optional Dish soap For more bubbles in the reaction.
  • as needed Paper towels For easy cleanup.
  • 1 each Protective aprons or old shirts To keep kids’ clothing clean.

Preparation

  • Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
  • Lay down newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to protect your surfaces.
  • Gather all materials within easy reach.

Creating the Art

  • Step 2: Mix the Color
  • In separate cups, mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with a few drops of food coloring.
  • Use a spoon to stir until the color is evenly distributed.
  • Step 3: Set Up Trays
  • Pour your colored baking soda mixture onto the shallow trays to create landscapes.
  • Encourage kids to explore different designs!
  • Step 4: Create the Reaction
  • In a separate cup, pour vinegar.
  • Optionally, add a drop of dish soap to the vinegar for extra bubbles.
  • Slowly drizzle the vinegar over the colored baking soda landscapes and watch the fizzing reaction!
  • Step 5: Observe and Enjoy
  • Encourage children to observe the reaction while touching (if safe) and smelling the reaction.
  • Discuss the science behind what they are witnessing!

Notes

Customize colors and add glitter for added fun. Suitable for various ages with supervision.
