Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar Use white granulated sugar.
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • ½ cup unsalted butter Make sure to use unsalted to control the saltiness.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Regular table salt.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Feel free to substitute with other flavors.
  • as needed Food coloring (various colors) Choose natural or artificial as per preference.
  • as needed Cornstarch For dusting to prevent sticking.

  • 1 Candy thermometer Essential for monitoring the cooking temperature.
  • 1 Greased baking sheet or silicone mat To pour the taffy onto once cooked.

Instructions
 

Prepare Your Space

  • Clear and clean your work area to begin.
  • Grease your baking sheet or silicone mat to prevent sticking.

Cook the Mixture

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar, corn syrup, butter, and salt.
  • Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
  • Attach a candy thermometer and monitor the temperature until it reaches 250°F (hard ball stage).

Flavor and Color

  • Remove the saucepan from heat and let the bubbling stop.
  • Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Divide the mixture into as many parts as you have colors.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to each part and mix thoroughly.

Cool and Knead

  • Allow the taffy to cool for a few minutes (wearing buttered gloves will help).
  • Once it’s cool enough to handle, start kneading each section individually until it becomes smooth and shiny.

Shape the Taffy

  • Roll the kneaded taffy into long ropes about ½ inch thick.
  • Cut them into bite-sized pieces with a buttered knife or kitchen scissors.
  • Dust pieces lightly with cornstarch to prevent sticking.

Notes

You can experiment with flavors and colors. Store wrapped taffy pieces in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
