  • 1 Small bowl or pipette To hold food coloring.
  • 1 Toothpick or skewer To pierce the oil layer.

Preparation

  • Find a flat surface to work on.
  • Gather all materials to ensure everything is within reach.

Creating the Fireworks

  • Pour water into your glass or plastic containers, filling them about halfway.
  • Slowly pour about 1 cup of vegetable oil into each container on top of the water layer.
  • In a small bowl, add a few drops of food coloring—each color in its own spot.
  • Use a toothpick or skewer to pierce the oil layer and drop the food coloring through.
  • Observe the colors bursting and mixing into the water, resembling fireworks.
  • Take time to observe the swirling colors and experiment by adding more colors.

Notes

Try mixing primary colors for secondary ones, add glitter for sparkle, use different containers for varied effects, or use fluorescent food coloring for glow in the dark effects.
