Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornstarch (fine and soft)
  • ½ cup oil (baby oil, vegetable oil, or any smooth oil)

Tools and Extras

  • 1 mixing bowl Consider one with a wide base
  • 1 spoon or spatula For mixing
  • a few drops food coloring Optional for a pop of color
  • 1 storage container For keeping your quicksand

Instructions

Making the Quicksand

  • Start by pouring 1 cup of cornstarch into your mixing bowl. Take a moment to watch it pile up softly.
  • Next, add in ½ cup of your chosen oil. Observe how it sits atop the cornstarch.
  • Use your spoon or spatula to start mixing the two. Stir slowly at first.
  • As the mixture begins to thicken, you might find it easier to use your hands. Feel the texture as you knead it gently.
  • If you desire color, add a few drops of food coloring and work it into the mixture with your hands.
  • Continue to knead until you achieve a playful, gooey consistency.
  • Once you’re satisfied with the texture, transfer it to your storage container.
  • Close the lid gently to invite your creation to rest.

Notes

To maintain smooth texture, store your quicksand in an airtight container. If it feels a little dry over time, add a few drops of oil and knead to restore consistency. You can also personalize your quicksand with different oils or colors.
