Ingredients

For the Candy Apples

  • 4 medium-sized green apples (Granny Smith is ideal) Ensure they are washed and dried thoroughly.
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (cotton candy colors: pink, blue, purple)
  • Cotton candy (freshly made or store-bought) For decorating the tops.
  • Sticks (wooden skewers or lollipop sticks)
  • Cooking thermometer To monitor the candy coating temperature.
  • Baking sheet lined with parchment paper For cooling the dipped apples.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by washing your apples thoroughly to remove any wax. Pat them dry with a clean towel.
  • Push a stick firmly into the top of each apple, leaving enough to hold.

Make the Candy Coating

  • In a medium saucepan, mix sugar, corn syrup, and water.
  • Heat over medium-high heat until the mixture comes to a boil. Stir occasionally, but avoid stirring too much once it starts boiling.
  • Use a cooking thermometer to monitor. You’re aiming for the soft crack stage, around 290°F (143°C).

Add Flavor and Color

  • Once at the correct temperature, remove from the stove and quickly stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Separate the hot mixture into two bowls to create pink and blue swirls. Add a few drops of food coloring to each and stir until fully incorporated.

Coat the Apples

  • Hold each apple by the stick and dip it into one color of the candy coating, allowing excess to drip off.
  • Quickly dip or drizzle the second color over the first for a cotton candy swirl effect.
  • Place each coated apple on the parchment-lined baking sheet.

Add Cotton Candy

  • Before the coating hardens completely, gently mold and press cotton candy around the top of each apple for an extra fluffy finish.

Notes

Consider experimenting with flavored extracts like strawberry or raspberry for a fruity twist. You can also use any food coloring to create your desired theme or season. Roll the coated apples in crushed nuts, sprinkles, or edible glitter before the coating hardens for added texture and flair.
