Ingredients
  

Materials needed

  • Old crayons Old crayons (any colors) Any colors work for this project.
  • 2 sheets Wax paper Cut into rectangles.
  • Various shapes Basic cookie cutter shapes (moons, stars, etc.) Choose shapes based on preference.
  • 1 piece Pencil or marker For tracing the cookie cutter shapes.
  • 1 piece Iron Requires adult supervision.
  • 1 sheet Parchment paper To cover the wax paper while melting.
  • 1 length Plastic or sturdy string For hanging the finished sun catchers.
  • 1 pair Scissors For cutting out shapes.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Gather old crayons: Remove paper wrappers and break them into smaller pieces (1-inch chunks).
  • Select a palette that appeals to you.

Arranging the Crayons

  • Cut two rectangles of wax paper, about 10x10 inches each.
  • Spread crayon chunks evenly between the two sheets of wax paper.

Melting the Crayons

  • Place a sheet of parchment paper over the wax paper bundle.
  • Set your iron to low heat.
  • Carefully press the iron onto the parchment paper for a few seconds until the crayons melt together.
  • Allow it to cool for a few minutes.

Cutting Out Shapes

  • Place cookie cutters over the wax paper and trace around with a pencil or marker.
  • Use scissors to cut out your desired shapes.

Creating the Hangings

  • Use a hole punch to create a hole at the top of each shape.
  • Tie a piece of string through the hole for hanging.

Notes

For extra sparkle, try adding biodegradable glitter to the crayon chunks before melting. Experiment with different types of paper for unique textures.
