For the structure

  • pipe cleaners (in desired shapes) Create the tree structure.
  • 1 heatproof container Like a glass jar, to hold the sugar solution.
  • 1 spoon For stirring the sugar solution.
  • 1 piece of string (optional) For hanging the crystal tree.
  • 1 small tray or plate To catch any drips.

Preparation

  • Shape the pipe cleaners into a tree structure, making sure it fits into your container.
  • Twist multiple pipe cleaners together for a sturdier base.

Creating the Sugar Solution

  • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and ½ cup of sugar.
  • Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring continuously until the sugar dissolves to a clear solution.

Final Steps

  • Stir in 1 tablespoon of corn syrup, and add a few drops of food coloring if desired.
  • Allow the solution to cool for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Carefully place your shaped pipe cleaner tree into the solution.
  • Leave the container in a cool, undisturbed area for several days.
  • After about 24 hours, check on the tree for crystal formations.

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring shades, shapes of pipe cleaners, and even different ingredients like salt or Epsom salts for various crystal effects. Once formed, enhance crystals with beads or glitter.
