Candy Cane Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar For the sugar solution.
  • 1 cup water To dissolve the sugar.
  • to taste food coloring (red and white) For coloring the sugar solution.
  • optional string For hanging the candy canes.
  • optional clothespins For securing the skewers in the jar.

Instructions
 

Prepare the Sugar Solution

  • In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water.
  • Over medium heat, stir the mixture until the sugar fully dissolves.
  • Once dissolved, bring the solution to a boil and let it boil for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Color the Solution

  • Divide the sugar solution into two separate bowls.
  • Add red food coloring to one bowl and leave the other bowl plain (white) for the classic candy cane effect.
  • Stir until you achieve your desired hue.

Assemble the Candy Canes

  • Take the wooden skewers and dip one end into the colored sugar solution.
  • Place the skewers vertically into the glass jar, ensuring they aren't touching the sides.
  • Use the cookie cutters to shape the remaining solution into candy cane shapes and carefully place them into the jar.

Allow Crystallization

  • Let the jars sit undisturbed in a cool, dry area for about a week.
  • Watch as sugar crystals begin to form around the skewers and molds!
