Ingredients

Materials Needed

  • 6 pieces Clean, dry seashells (large enough to hold crystals)
  • 1 cup Borax (sodium borate) Used to create the crystals.
  • 2 cups Water Boiled for the solution.
  • a few drops Food coloring (optional) To color the crystals.
  • 1 piece Heat-resistant container or glass jar To hold the solution and seashells.
  • 1 piece Spoon for stirring
  • 1 piece String (optional) For hanging the shells.

Instructions

Preparing the Solution

  • Boil approximately 2 cups of water.
  • Gradually stir in about 1 cup of Borax to the boiling water, stirring until fully dissolved.
  • If using food coloring, add a few drops now and mix.

Setting Up the Seashells

  • Select clean, dry seashells that are large enough to hold a good amount of crystal mix.
  • Place the seashells at the bottom of a heat-resistant container or glass jar.

Pouring the Solution

  • Slowly pour the Borax solution over the seashells, ensuring they are completely submerged.
  • If using string, tie it to the shells and suspend them in the solution.

Growing Crystals

  • Place the container in a quiet spot for 24-48 hours to allow crystals to grow.
  • Check periodically and observe the crystals forming on the shells.

Final Touches

  • Once significant growth is observed, carefully remove the seashells and rinse them gently with water.
  • Let the shells dry completely before displaying or using them.

Notes

Try using different types of seashells and food coloring for a unique crystal display. Adding glitter to the Borax solution can give a sparkly effect. Smaller shells can make great gifts.
