Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup Water Preferably hot water to help dissolve boric acid.
  • 3 tablespoons Boric Acid Essential for crystal growth.
  • 2 tablespoons Epsom Salt Gradually added to the solution.
  • few drops Food Coloring (optional) For customizing the color of the crystals.

Tools and Supplies

  • 1 String About 12-18 inches long.
  • 1 Small container (like a bowl or cup) To hold the solution.
  • 1 Stirring stick or spoon For mixing the solution.
  • 1 Paper towels To clean any excess solution.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Mix 1 cup of water with 3 tablespoons of boric acid in a small container.
  • Heat the water until it’s near boiling (this helps the boric acid dissolve better).
  • Stir the solution thoroughly until the boric acid is completely dissolved.

Add Epsom Salt

  • Gradually add 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt to the hot solution.
  • Stir well until fully dissolved. If you wish to add color, include a few drops of food coloring now.

Set Up Your Tree

  • Cut a length of string, about 12-18 inches long.
  • Tie one end of the string around a small stick or twig to create the trunk of the tree, leaving the other end free to hang.

Create the Crystal Structure

  • Drape the string over the container so the stick is suspended in the solution without touching the bottom.
  • Use a paper towel to clean any excess solution on the sides.

Let the Crystals Grow

  • Leave the setup in a cool and undisturbed place for several days.
  • Check back daily as the crystals start to form. You can observe the changes in size and shape.

Notes

Experiment with different types of salts and coloring for various effects. Always supervise children during the activity.
