For the Crystal Solution

  • 1 cup water Room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar Granulated sugar preferred
  • 1 cup corn syrup Helps with the crystal growth
  • Food coloring (various colors) For coloring the crystals
  • Glitter (optional) For added sparkle

For Crystal Formation

  • Pipe cleaners (any color) Shaped into heart forms
  • Glass jars or cups To hold the solution and hearts
  • String and pencil To suspend the hearts in the solution

Preparation

  • Shape pipe cleaners into heart forms by bending them. Twist the ends tightly to secure the shape.

Making the Solution

  • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar.
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar completely dissolves, and the liquid becomes clear.
  • Slowly add 1 cup of corn syrup while continuing to stir. Note the thick consistency of the mixture.
  • Stir in your chosen food coloring and mix well. For a glittery effect, add a small amount of glitter.

Pour and Hang

  • Pour the solution into glass jars or cups.
  • Tie a piece of string around the top of each heart shape and suspend them in the jars so they are fully submerged but not touching the bottom.

Set and Wait

  • Place the jars in a cool, undisturbed spot and allow the crystals to grow for 24-48 hours.

Final Steps

  • Carefully remove the hearts from the liquid and place them on a paper towel to dry completely.

Notes

Color combinations can be mixed for a rainbow effect. Use larger or smaller pipe cleaners for different heart sizes. Incorporate essential oils for scent.
