Ingredients

Materials for Crystal Ornaments

  • 1 cup Boric Acid Available at pharmacies or online.
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 piece Glass jar Heat-safe.
  • 1 piece String or fishing line
  • 1 piece Paper clip Or another weight.
  • a few drops Food coloring Optional for colored crystals.
  • 1 source Heating source Like a stovetop or microwave.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a heat-safe glass jar, combine 2 cups of water with 1 cup of boric acid.
  • Heat the mixture until the boric acid dissolves completely. Stir the solution gently.

Creating Your Ornament

  • Tie a string to a paper clip and attach it securely. This will serve as a weight to keep your ornament submerged.
  • If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to the solution for colorful crystals.

Submerging the String

  • Lower the string with the paper clip into the jar, ensuring it doesn’t touch the sides or bottom.
  • Leave a bit of string above the jar's rim for easy handling.

Letting Crystals Form

  • Cover the jar with a lid or plastic wrap.
  • Set the jar in a cool, undisturbed location. Over the next 24-72 hours, crystals will start to grow.

Removing and Drying

  • Once your ornaments have reached the desired crystal size, remove them from the jar.
  • Rinse them under cool water to remove excess boric acid, then let them dry completely.

Notes

Use different colors of food coloring to create multi-colored crystals, experiment with weights or forms to vary the shape of your ornaments, and try sugar or salt instead of boric acid for different results. For extra sparkle, sprinkle glitter on the crystals before they dry.
