  • 0.5 cup Borax Essential for crystal formation.
  • 2 cups Boiling water Must be boiling for best results.
  • 1 item Glass jar For suspending the snowflake.
  • 1 item Pencil or chopstick To hang your snowflake.
  • 1 item String or thread For tying your snowflake.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Twist pipe cleaners together to form a snowflake shape. Be creative with your design; it can be simple or intricate.

Making the Solution

  • In a glass jar, dissolve 1/2 cup of borax into 2 cups of boiling water. Stir until fully dissolved.
  • Watch as the water becomes cloudy and fills with borax particles.

Suspending the Snowflake

  • Tie your snowflake to a pencil or chopstick and suspend it in the jar so it doesn’t touch the bottom.

Crystal Formation

  • Set the jar in a cool, undisturbed area for several hours or overnight.
  • After a few hours, observe the crystals forming on your snowflake.

Finishing Up

  • Carefully remove your snowflake and rinse it under cool water to remove any excess borax.
  • Let it dry completely.

Notes

Customize your snowflakes using different colored pipe cleaners or by adding glitter before crystallization. Experiment with borax to water ratios for different sizes of crystals.
