Ingredients

Materials

  • 5 pieces Pipe cleaners (white or colored)
  • 1 cup Boiling water
  • 3 tablespoons Borax (laundry detergent) For making crystal solution
  • 1 piece Glass jar or container To hold the Borax solution
  • 1 piece Spoon for stirring For mixing Borax in water
  • 1 piece String Optional for hanging the snowflake
  • 1 piece Pencil or stick For suspending the snowflake

Instructions

Preparation

  • Twist pipe cleaners together to form a snowflake shape. Use a pencil to help shape the design and ensure it is symmetrical.

Make the Borax Solution

  • Boil water in a kettle.
  • Measure out 3 tablespoons of Borax for every cup of boiling water.
  • Carefully add Borax to the boiling water and stir until it dissolves completely.

Suspend the Snowflake

  • Attach a string to the center of the snowflake and tie the other end to a pencil or stick.
  • Place the pencil across the mouth of the jar, allowing the snowflake to hang down into the solution without touching the sides.

Grow the Crystals

  • Let the jar sit undisturbed for several hours or overnight.
  • Watch as the crystals begin to form on the snowflake over time.

Remove and Dry

  • Once you see a good amount of crystals, carefully remove the snowflake.
  • Rinse it gently in cold water to remove any excess Borax, then allow it to dry.

Notes

Tips for creating colorful crystals include adding food coloring to the boiling water and experimenting with different shapes and sizes of pipe cleaners. You can dip dried snowflakes in glue and sprinkle glitter for extra sparkle.
