  • as needed Newspaper or tissue paper Torn into strips for layering.
  • 1 part Flour For making the papier-mâché mixture.
  • 2 parts Water Mix with flour to make paste.
  • 1 bowl Bowl for mixing To prepare your paste.

  • 1 set Paintbrushes or sponges For applying paint.
  • 1 pair Scissors For cutting paper and making an opening.
  • 1 length String or rope For hanging the piñata.
  • as needed Treats (candies, toys) For filling the piñata.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all your materials and work in a space that can get messy.
  • Mix: Combine one part flour with two parts water in a bowl to create a paste. Alternatively, use diluted white glue.

Creating the Piñata

  • Blow Up: Inflate your balloon to a large size and tie it off to form the egg shape.
  • Tear the paper into strips, aiming for about 1 inch in width.
  • Dip each strip into the mixture, smooth off the excess, and lay it over the balloon. Cover the entire surface by layering at least 4-6 strips.
  • Allow the first layer to dry completely (this may take several hours or overnight).
  • Apply additional layers of paper, drying between each, until the piñata is sturdy.
  • Once fully dry, carefully pop the balloon and remove it.
  • Use paint to add color and designs to your piñata.
  • Make a small slit in the piñata (bottom or top) to fill it with your treasures.
  • Stuff your piñata with goodies, then tape the opening closed.
  • Attach string or rope and hang your piñata for all to enjoy.

Notes

Experiment with different papers for varied textures. Use food coloring in your paste for colorful layers.
