DIY Bioplastic Suncatchers

Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup water Room temperature water
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup For added glossiness
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar Acts as a preservative
  • 1 cup corn starch Thickener for the bioplastic
  • optional Food coloring For adding color to suncatchers

Supplies

  • 1 piece Wax paper or silicone baking mat For shaping suncatchers
  • to taste Craft paint or transparent glue For decoration if desired

Instructions
 

Preparation of Mixture

  • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 1 tablespoon of corn syrup, and 1 tablespoon of vinegar.
  • Heat over medium heat until warm, stirring gently.

Add Corn Starch

  • Gradually whisk in 1 cup of corn starch until fully dissolved.
  • Stir continuously until the mixture thickens to a gel-like consistency.

Add Color

  • Remove from heat and add a few drops of food coloring for vibrant hues.
  • Mix well until you achieve your desired color.

Shape the Suncatchers

  • On a piece of wax paper or a silicone baking mat, pour out the mixture into desired shapes (like circles or hearts).
  • Use a spoon or spatula to flatten and shape the bioplastic.

Drying Time

  • Allow the suncatchers to dry for 24-48 hours, or until they feel hard to the touch.
  • Carefully peel them off the wax paper once fully dried.

Decoration (Optional)

  • Use craft paint or transparent glue to add additional designs or embellishments to your suncatchers.

Notes

Consider using cookie cutters for fun shapes, layering different colors, or incorporating natural elements like pressed flowers. Ensure suncatchers dry fully to maintain strength. They are biodegradable and can be disposed of in compost.
